5 Netflix Hits You Haven't Seen Yet

By Trevor Durham on February 14, 2016

It’s a chilly time of year, and what better way to warm up than with hot chocolate, a cuddle buddy, and Netflix? While everybody has certainly dipped their feet into Orange is the New Black, Making a Murderer, House of Cards, and Jessica Jones, what could be left on Netflix that the binge culture hasn’t devoured already?

Boy, do I have a surprise for you. (Click on the pictures for a link to a trailer!)

E-Team: The Netflix film that’s even better than the A-Team! This incredible (and rarely discussed) documentary shows the adventures of a handful of international workers who seek to uncover and document the atrocities committed by cruel, tyrannical governments. Did you like Narcos? What about seeing the truth of the other side, who deal with the crooks? Only now, the crooks run the countries seen. Netflix really uncovered an unappreciated portion of our world.

Virunga: Too much politics in that documentary? How about you try Virunga, a heart-warming story of Congo national park workers who seek only to protect the animals and park that they love. The true story is ‘heart-stopping’ as you watch British oil companies try to encroach on nature’s beauty, and see the fury of the innocent souls who want to protect the world they live in. Netflix even garnered Oscar buzz for Best Documentary with this one.

The Square: Oh hey look, another documentary! If animals aren’t enough for you, look no further than The Square. This film follows the on-going, and incredibly important, Egyptian Crisis in the Middle East against Mubarak and ISIS. This story may be graphic, but knowing what is happening in your world today is more crucial (and simple) than ever. You’re only a click away from awareness. This is one of Netflix’s first documentaries, but still resonates as one of the most powerful.

Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom:
This is Netflix’s most recent, and in my opinion powerful, documentary. Ukraine’s revolution began in November of 2014 after decades of struggle. This film shows the truth on the ground as the civilians come together in unity, barricading themselves as the revolutionaries of old, and begging for love and understanding. To see, in 2015, a ‘civilized’ country massacring unarmed citizens is simply heart-wrenching. The Ukraine’s fight continues, even after the dictator fled- there is a Russian/Ukranian war that the film cites as having over six thousand casualties in a matter of months. Netflix did right by this. Where is the awareness? How do we help? And why have you not seen this cry for help?

Tom Segura: Completely Normal: Okay fam, I have to admit, this guy is funnier than I expected and completely underrated, check out his deadpan delivery after all these documentaries rip your understanding of modern society to shreds, it’ll give you brief respite. Netflix even gave him a new 2016 comedy special, he’s great. I promise.
