What People Will Think Of You When You Go To UC Berkeley

By Rawan AbuShaban on August 8, 2014

Congratulations! You’ve been accepted into UC Berkeley, and now it’s time to spread the news.

Here are a few reactions you could expect from your friends and family when you tell them you’ve decided to become a golden bear.

What your friends in high school will think:

Wow! You are impressive. They think you’re the smartest, most driven person, ever. You did really well in school, so it’s no surprise that you’re going UC Berkeley, AKA the No. 1 public university in the world.

They know you’ll probably grow apart over time, but they will always look up to you as a hero-figure. You should expect that they’ll ask you for help when they begin applying to college.

Remember how others helped you during that stressful process? Take this as an opportunity to pay it forward!

Yeah, that’s cute.

What your parents will think:

They trust you … probably. Yep, college is going to be tough, but you’re a good kid, their pride and joy.

There’s definitely no way you’d be out partying during your free time when you could be hitting the books and inventing things to change the future as we know it, right?

Right. Of course, this resolve will be shaken up every time you spend spring break away from home. And when you start dating. It’s best to keep in touch with your parents, but remember: don’t ask, don’t tell.

What your ultra-conservative grandparents will think:

… Let’s just say that the student body at UC Berkeley has a reputation for supporting socialist ideologies, LGBT rights, and affirmative action. Chances are, granny and pops will let you know exactly what they think.

What your significant other will think:

You did it! They’re proud of you, but what does this mean for you two?

If you’re in a serious relationship, your high school sweetheart might be a bit worried about those wild frat parties and coed dormitory bathrooms.

You know that stereotype, the one about everyone in California being really, really, ridiculously good-looking? That certainly doesn’t help. Your significant other will be marking all the days on their calendar that they can come visit you, so make sure to keep in touch and show them that you still care, too.

If you don’t think your relationship will survive the separation, then you should make that clear before your significant other takes a surprise visit to your school and realizes you let all of your friends think that you’re single. (Please don’t be that person.)

What your best friend will think:

Your best friend might be your bro, but they’re as proud as your parents to hear that you’re going to UC Berkeley.

They supported you during the entire application process. If you received a rejection letter, your loyal BFF would talk smack about not only the school, but the state and its entire population for a solid week.

They spared no criticism when they proofread your essays, and they helped you sell yourself on your applications by offering glowing descriptions of you when saying good things about yourself just didn’t feel right.

Who has better stuff to say about you than your best friend? They know you won’t forget about them while you’re out having the time of your life for the next four years.

Even if you never seem to have the time to call or text your best friend as much as you used to during high school, when you reunite during breaks, it’ll be as if the two of you never separated.

What you think:

Like most incoming freshmen, you’re probably experiencing a lot of mixed feelings.

You’re about to undergo possibly the greatest journey of your life as of yet, but you’re anxious about the changes you’ll have to make: adjusting to a different place, making new friends, and finally making a decision about what you want to study.

You might be alarmed to find a little apathy in the mix amidst all this apprehension, but don’t worry. Once school starts, it will start to sink in and you’ll understand what a great choice you made by coming to Cal.

Reality:

Nobody’s opinion of you affects who you are or what you can accomplish during your time in college. College is what you make of it, and at UC Berkeley, your opportunities are limitless. Don’t hold back, push yourself, and have fun!
