6 Ways To Make Moving Furniture Easy And Enjoyable

Whether you’re moving to a new off-campus apartment or you simply want to switch things up in your living room, moving your furniture can be a real drag (no pun intended).

Heavy furniture that makes you feel like your arms are going to fall off, fear of scuffing your apartment’s beautiful hardwood floors, and the need to be extra careful with furniture that you’re renting (because who wants to actually buy a sofa that you’re probably not going to use for more than four years?) can make moving furniture an unenjoyable experience.

However, it doesn’t have to be all that bad. Check out my tips below on how to make moving furniture an easy and — dare I say, fun — experience.

1. Snag some furniture sliders.

Furniture sliders are pieces of soft, yet durable material such as felt that you can put under the legs of furniture such as dense sofas and chairs to prevent damaging your floors. Simply lift up each corner of the object, place a furniture slider beneath, and drag.

For an extremely low price, you can make moving furniture easy and avoid floor damage. It’s the best of both worlds!

This pack of four is available from Lowe’s for less than $6, and the adhesive indented backing helps ensure that your furniture won’t slip off. Furniture sliders can work on both carpet and hard floors.

2. Blast some tunes.

Music makes every tedious task a little more easy and enjoyable. Blasting your favorite artist or an upbeat playlist on a music streaming service such as Songza or 8tracks will have you dancing while you perform the most tedious task ever.

Songza has a huge selection of playlists dedicated to “Cleaning the House,” with options ranging from rowdy indie and alt rock to ’80s feel-good hits.

On 8tracks, you can search the tags of playlists that other people have posted for things such as “moving out” and discover a menagerie of songs that perhaps you’ve never heard of before.

However you choose to go about it, you can make the moving furniture experience a little more bearable with some music.

3. Rent a dolly.

While dollies may seem like a no-brainer, I feel like they’re an often-forgotten asset. Their power shouldn’t be underestimated; the dollies designed to transport furniture can carry at least 700 pounds at a time.

You can rent dollies of varying sizes from your local U-Haul for $10 or less, which is the way to go if you have to move larger items such as appliances.

To make moving your smaller heavy items a little less strenuous, dollies are also the way to go. Home improvement retailers such as Home Depot also offer dolly rentals by the hour, day, or week at extremely reasonable prices.

4. Fetch your friends.

Two (or more) heads are better than one, right? If you get you and your roommate to each bring just a friend or two, you’ll be done moving furniture in no time. Extra arms means extra strength and extra time left over at the end.

In addition to helping you carry furniture, your friends can hold open doors and spot you while you move a particularly difficult piece to help ensure that you don’t get hurt.

Pair with some music as mentioned above, and you’ve got yourself a little party – especially if you reward them for their help with a bottle of wine that you can all drink to celebrate when you finish.

5. Keep it high and low.

This one will require a friend, but it’s the most safe and efficient way to carry tall items such as shelving units and dressers.

According to The Family Handyman, you should “tip the item backward at an angle and have one person carry the top while the other carries the bottom [because] this centers the weight and keeps the item from swinging out of control.”

Look at the hand placement of the people in the photo above. This way of carrying the item is much more comfortable and makes the item more difficult to drop, especially if you’re carrying it up and down the stairs.

6. Break for snacks and water.

The only thing worse than spending the day moving furniture around is spending the day moving furniture around while you’re hungry and thirsty.

In addition to eating breakfast and chugging some water before starting, you should take a break while you’re moving the furniture to give yourself the necessities.

The water part is pretty basic – just drink it! As for food, make sure you’re not eating anything too sweet that will make you crash in an hour or so.

According to Women’s Health Magazine, a few energy-boosting foods include fresh fruit (apples are my fav), Greek yogurt, and black bean or lentil chips dipped in some spreadable cheese.

Whatever you do, make sure that you are nourishing your body during this strenuous activity.
