Love his class. He is a great and funny guy. you must attend ALL his classes because he does take attendance, he gives you a little extra credit for coming to class everyday but might not make a difference. I found the material a little difficult, but it wasn't as hard as I thought, just take good notes, and ask questions when something is confusing. He does curve grades, four homeworks, and there is one midterm and a final. The final is cumulative, so just remember to study. I would definitely recommend him.

This professor is one of the best professors I know! You would love him and his teaching style. Phil 1000 is kind of challenging, but this professor makes the lessons easy to understand. He simplifies complex things. If it happens that you do not understand something, just raise your hand and tell him your concerns. He would provide more examples until you get the concept. Also, he is always willing to help you during his office hours. NEVER BE SHY. He is very approachable. You will love him! I tell you! He cracks jokes and his jokes are relevant to the lessons! He is very funny. I think everyone who takes his class will enjoy his teaching style. He has this strong English accent but you will eventually get used to it. After 3 meetings, I got used to his accent. To be honest with you, if English is not your first language or you are just starting to learn English, do not take PHIL 1000. This is all about evaluating arguments. It can give you a little bit headache- expect that to happen. It's normal. haha! This class will test your ability to think critically. It's going to be easy if you would be responsible. Study in advance. He posts on blackboard what section of the book you need to read for every class meeting. No quizzes. 4 home works. 1 midterm. 1 final exam. No essays! His grading is great! He'll explain it to you in class. EVERYONE, TAKE THIS CLASS and I tell you, you will feel at the end of the class that your thinking skills have improved a lot. I commend this professor. He is so passionate when it comes to teaching. You would see and feel it! CSUEB, do not let this professor go! He is one of CSUEB'S greatest treasure! More powers Prof. Gorton! I would never forget you and your class. =))

Really easy class. If you want an A, all you have to do is show up to class everyday (I believe attendance is required), and write down ALL the examples he writes on the blackboard. The homework is usually to write your own examples of whatever he asks.

Honestly i took this class after reading all the reviews thinking it would be an easy A, it wasn't! i regret taking this class. i want to say He's a decent guy, but i can't. When he teaches it makes sense and when he does class work it seems understandable. but for his homework he writes his own questions so he makes it twice as hard. Which is somewhat understandable but the thing is its such a big jump from the easy work you do in class to his homework that you get lost. The answers seem like there can be more then one, but if you dont get the specific one he is looking for its wrong. Hes not the most helpful during his office hours and if you try to go over the homework with him he'll only give you very vague hints. He gets frustrated easily. if u dont do well on the first homework your doomed. it only gets harder.

I don't like the subject, but this teacher makes it interesting. I could not stop laughing at his examples! Ha ha still laughing thinking about it. He curves a lot ( a little too much I think) and always reviews the answers on hw and tests. If u cant make it to office hours, he will change his schedule to accomodate urs. He's really nice (never smiles tho and admits it himself... but that just makes him seem funnier!) and cracks jokes everyday. You do the exercises in class outloud everyday, but don't be afraid to be wrong. U won't be embarassed. He makes everyone feel comfortable. It's an easy A class. He loves answering questions and will take as much time as possible in trying to help u. For example, he asked me to ask my question about 4 different ways so that he could try to understand what I didn't understand. That was really nice. This course consists of 4 homework assignments (the questions are like the ones in the book or the ones he shows in class), a midterm, and a final. All are curved a little differently, but the curve is pretty big. It would be hard to fail this class. Enjoy!

you would not regret taking this professor. if only all professors makes sense like him, knows as much about teaching like him, has as much of a humor sense like him then students like us would have such a wonderful world! if you get what i mean about all the frustration then take him when you have the chance and ignore others if possible. you'll get what i mean when you take him. it's fair, do your wrok then you won't suffer. you'll love him!

He tries hard to teach people a confusing and boring subject, but even through his efforts this stuff is still confusing and boring. All I can say is read the book and pay attention in class, with good luck u might end up getting ur A.

Professor Gorton is good at teaching and is reasonable about the amount of work he assigns. His tests are pretty close to what you do on your homework. As long as you put in a decent effort you will get a B or higher.

He makes his classes really fun to attend. His attitude is awesome and he's very approachable. He makes a lot of corny jokes which are actually really funny because he's a short british man with a fro. He's very approachable and very willing to help you out if you need help.

The class consists of 4 homework with are due every other week, a midterm, and a final exam. He gives you two points extra credit if you miss two absenses or less. If you miss more than 2 absenses, your points will be deducted. I enjoy his lectures a lot. He breaks it down and makes it easier for students to digest the material. He's always open for questions, so if you need help, come to him. What screw me up most in his class was the last couple of weeks as the materials become much harder than the beginning of the course. I would definitely recomment him if you plan to take Phil 1000, Phil 1001, or Logic 1001.

Prof. Gorton is a great teacher! This is the best class that I have taken at CSUH. He assigns 4 homeworks, midterm and a final. But they are all based on material that he has gone over in class. Although he doesn't take attendence, it is very important to attend class everyday. He is a fair grader and is very approachable if you are having trouble with the class.

I made him smile! He claims he NEVER smiles! His class is ok. I dunno how any one is to think clearly at 8am. Doesn`t hold attendance against you. His homeworks are time consuming but gives you moderate time for completion. You can tell a lot bout his life from the examples he chooses to use in class. He dislikes Arnold Schwarzenegger greatly.

Prof. Gorton`s Logic class is pretty easy. He discusses the sections in detail and goes over the homework as well. If you have a question, he`ll answer it. His test are pretty straight forward, so are the homeworks. The only trickiness, and he tells you this as well, is sometimes he`ll have another answer in mind than the one you or whoever put down. If you can argue/convince him of your point, he`ll consider your answer and may give you full/partial credit. Also, when doing exercises in class, he hints at you if your answer is wrong by saying things like, "well... that`s a good answer too but..." Good class, good teacher.

This man makes the subject of logic much less complex that it looks. Lectures are very straighforward with many examples and exercises afterwards so everyone gets a chance to participate. Even if you don`t get the material at first, you will if you go to class regularly and ask plenty of questions. He`s a good teacher with a nice english accent. Worth taking for this course.

great professor, great course. the way this guy looks alone makes this class interesting. picture a short, english man in his 40`s, with an overgrown curly afro, with a large head and a major stuttering problem in vintage outfits straight from the 70`s. sometimes in the middle of lectures i found myself laughing hystarically at his obsene tactics and overt gestures as he explained logic. as a teacher, he is magnificent. he takes the subject of logic, a rather confusing course, and makes it easy. he is very patient, and gets the entire class involved when doing practice problems while being very open to any questions. he gets excited when someone has a problem or is confused, and jumps in joy when he is able to explain in further detail about a problem. he makes the course a breeze, and isn`t demanding at all, with 4 homework assignments and a midterm and final which are much like the homework assignments he gives out. he is just a lovable guy and easy to get along with and learn from, if possible you must take this guy for logic, watching him struggle as he explains fallacies because of his severe stuttering problem in his dry british accent alone is worth it

THE BEST PROFESSOR! When you first see him he looks mean but really isn`t. Very smart and funny. Always helpful to the students. Some professors hate it when you ask question but not Gorton. His test are easy. Just know your h/w well and you`ll be fine.

Plus side: cares about the subject he teaches, is very knowledgeable, very organized, not snobby as one might expect from a logician, goes out of his way to help the students, seems to have a desire for all students to succeed, has a good (dry) sense of humor. Minus side: can’t think of any. Overall: I think he is a good teacher and would recommend him to anyone wanting to learn to use logic.

Gorton is one of the best teachers I`ve ever had. Some students think his lectures are boring but his sense of humor always had me up and awake. Gorton is an intellegent professor who knows what he`s teaching. During his lectures he explain`s things very thoroughly where it can be understood easily. He is always willing to help his students in problems they may have. He makes sure to help you understand if you are confused; unlike other professors who try to explain but give up if the students don`t understand right away. A lot of people think this course is easy and some think it is a little hard. It depends on the person.

The subject matter of this course is dry, but Professor Gorton`s sense of humor made the class bearable and even enjoyable at times. Very organized and presents the material in a clear way with plenty of examples. Grades based on take-home assignments and 3 exams. Grades fairly. Will use attendance to boost your grade a bit of you`re borderline, but doesn`t use it to take away points. Great guy with that dry, British sense of humor that actually complements the course.

Speaks softly with a British accent, and maybe like used to have a stuttering problem but has pretty much gotten over it. Better nont sit in the back of the room if you want to hear well, though. Seems kind of stiff and formal at first, but if you talk to him at break, he loosens up a bit, and after he getes more comfortable with the class, he starts making jokes. It just takes a while to realize he made a joke because of the British sense of humor. If I had to take another Philosophy class, he's a pretty painless Professor to take it from.
