Dr. Sugahara is the only professor at CSUEB that teaches STAT 3401, so if you need the class, you will have to take him. The class is tough. Really tough. Be ready to work hard. If you do the homework and habitually review the lecture notes and handouts from blackboard, then you'll do OK. Dr. Sugahara covers the topic fairly and thoroughly, and there are never any surprises. Some people don't care for his lecture style, which is very fast. But you can tell he enjoys the subject. Further, he's very receptive to questions, and what isn't covered in class he's happy to delve into during office hours. You'll need to be strong in calculus to survive this class. However, in the area where I was weak, Dr. Sugahara patiently helped me work my way through during a visit to his office hours.
If you have to take this class, believe the rumors; it's really hard. But Dr. Sugahara will treat you fair and you'll leave the class knowing you earned your grade, whatever it is.

My only complaint about the class was that he went too slow during the first about 8 weeks of the course and then rushed the last 2 weeks.

This man makes this challenging subject relatively easy to learn. He is fair with the grading and I believe he even curves it for you as well. I still recall my first day in class where all 49 enrolled students showed up as well as half the 22 people on the waiting list. Because that is how good he is!

I love Dr. Sugahara. Although the lectures are almost boring to death, he explains the material clearly with excellent examples. He provides supplement information on Blackboard, so you can download notes and homework solutions, although no homework was ever due. He provides a quiz one week before tests, and if time is a factor, will give you some answers or ways to go about the quiz or exam to make it easier for us. Unfortunately he had some personal issues in his life this quarter so he had to be out of state a couple of days, but he made sure there was a substitute to lecture or proctor an exam. Dr. Sugahara's grading policies are amazing; he dropped the lowest quiz score, and decreased your lowest exam (two midterms and the final) to a factor of 40% and increased your best two to 60% of your grade. He would reflect class outcomes on minitab so you can see how the class did, and most often it was a B or better, with most students receiving between 89-100. If you go to lectures (even once a week), review the notes, and do the homework it is incredibly easy to pass this class.

Dr. Sugahara is a humorous, patient, and experienced instructor. He makes statistics even more understandable and interesting by drawing examples from medical field. Besides that, Dr. Sugahara really impresses me with his willingness to help students in different aspects. If you pay attention in his classes and digest all homework assignments, you definitely gain another A's in your transcript.

I had this professor from 8pm to 10pm at night, not a time I would normally like to be sitting in class, but the way Sugahara teaches, I showed up to every lecture, even though attendance wasn't officially mandatory. He's funny and articulate, teaches well but doesn't bog the class down with pedantry. I didn't do too well on the first quiz but he gave extra credit which helped me pick up my grade. You'll have to put some effort in to get a good grade, but his lighthearted lectures make coming to class worthwhile. 3 Open book quizzes (lowest dropped) and 2 closed book midterms (lowest dropped) and one final constitute your grade. Allows 1-2 sheets of notes per midterm/final. Explains proofs well so that they make sense to the layman.

Its definitely a good thing that Sugahara allows open book and notes on tests. However, I believe a lot of students get lazy and think they do not need to study. This isn't high school guys, expect at least a little studying! This class is easy, but only if you go over the (very helpful) homework solutions and notes that he gives you before taking the tests. Sugahara is so approachable for help and truly wants his student to do well. He is also a very understanding and sympathetic professor.

Sugahara is an awesome teacher! I wish I could take him for my Soc Stat class because he is sooo awesome! His tests are open book and use the same steps as in the notes. For someone not to do will, they didn't take good notes or do the practice exams. Sugahara wants you to do well. 3 exams, drop one. Great personality. Great teacher. I learned a lot even during the summer where I baked and thought I would pass out.

I took this class over summer and it is Dr. Sugahara is the easiest statistic professor ever. His exams are open notes. So if you take good notes, then the exams is a piece of cake. He even provides last quarter's exams as practice.

Dr. Sugahara provided handouts in addition to the text that was very useful in understanding the material. He doesn't teach down to his students and obviously loves the subject matter. I suggest making an effort to take any class he teaches.

He is very interested in what he teaches. He comes prepared. He tries to engage students. He always takes time to answer any questions. This man is funny, although some of his jokes are corny, but funny nonetheless. Quizzes and exams are open-book and open-notes. Take a class with him if you can.

He likes to prove theorem, which in this class level is pretty useless. He goes on and on until he did not have enough time to cover all materials. Beware, exams are really hard.

Dr. Sugahara is a very intelligent and easy going teacher, but he is very straightforward too. He teaches this class as if no one knows what stats is, which is good for all the bio majors that have to take it. He can be redundant on the material and slow, but some parts of stats is difficult to understand. He doesn`t care if you take show for lectures, but at least show up for exams. If you fail very badly on one exam, he`ll tell you the chances of you passing the class. But overall he is very nice althrough a little weird.

When I first got into this class, I thought it would be an easy A because he allows you to use any notes and your book for every quiz and test. However, I do not find his lectures very helpful. This professor goes on and on about a topic and expects you to know what he`s talking about. One advice to whoever wants to take this professor is that you HAVE to do the homework (even though it is not collected or graded) it`ll definately help you for the quizzes and tests.

Good instructor. Well-organized, knows what he`s explaining and does not leave formulas unproven, which keeps students right in the track. Homework for every session, which is not graded (just for your exams` sake). Three midterms and a final, and they are NOT comprehensive. A piece of cheating sheet is allowed for every exam. When you take this calss, don`t try to neglect preparation, since this class is not at all an easy-passing class. Even though he does his best to help us out, the subject could be tougher than that. Get prepared and come to the class, then you`re gonna be all right. Good luck!
